Lockheed Martin. Where the discipline began — the engineer other companies’ operations get handed to.
Lockheed Martin’s IT-outsourcing division ran the operations of client companies — Nike, Viacom and its Simon & Schuster company, Solano County, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce among them. The job description, stripped of ceremony: when a client’s operation has a problem, you are the engineer it gets handed to.
Sent inside client operations to map their business and IT systems end to end — production facilities, engineers, directors, internal IT — then bring the map home and train the delivery organization on it: a staff of about sixty, management included, briefed with recommendations attached.
The profession has a name now — the industry calls it a forward-deployed engineer, and the market now spends billions staffing it. This was that job before it had the name. Every account in this directory is one deployment of it.
Two decades later, it’s still the job. Now the deployment is into businesses like yours — that is the whole company.
First-hand: our figures, from our watch. We were in the room — examine any of them on the call.
