Department of Energy / Bonneville. The cost came out — and stayed out.
At Bonneville Power, the error message is the lights. The transmission systems under sustainment carried 15,000 miles of high-voltage facilities across the Pacific Northwest — grid operations where “down” is not a ticket queue, it’s a region.
Sustainment of the transmission-side systems, work running to the Administrator’s office — the agency’s top desk — and cybersecurity initiatives at the CISO level. Then one system, re-architected: we found what it was costing Bonneville to operate the way it always had, and took the cost out.
One system re-architected: we found what it was costing Bonneville Power to operate the way it always had — and took it out. Not once: it’s stayed out every year since. Achieved.
$500,000 a year, returned — and still returning, untouched: no initiative, no program, no one defending it in a budget review. That is what architecture does that effort can’t.
First-hand: our figures, from our watch. We were in the room — examine any of them on the call.
