When the business runs through your head, more software doesn’t help
Every tool you’ve bought still needs the same operating system: you. You price the tricky jobs. You approve the exceptions. You remember why the schedule is the way it is. Software didn’t remove the bottleneck — it added interfaces to it.
That’s the honest reason growth stalls in businesses run by capable owners. Not effort, not talent — the fact that judgment lives in one head, and heads don’t scale. Every new hire, tool, and location adds another line into the same queue: yours.
What actually removes the bottleneck isn’t another app. It’s your judgment, written into systems: rules where rules are enough, checked automation where they aren’t, and your sign-off kept only for the moments that genuinely deserve you. The measure of progress is blunt — what stopped needing you this month? If the answer keeps being “nothing,” the business isn’t growing; it’s accumulating.
What stopped needing you this month?
This is how the biggest operations run. At Nike’s world headquarters, six thousand people worked on top of systems we answered for — nobody’s memory was the system, and when it mattered, the systems held. The same discipline fits a business your size; it just has never been offered to you.
